Next Friday, August 22 2025 at 6:00 p.m., as part of the Fishing Together program, we will present the TrunCAT project at the Port of Torredembarra, next to the Vogadors de Baixamar venue.
The TrunCAT project was launched in 2023 with the aim of promoting knowledge and conservation of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in the southern Catalan coast, a marine area especially affected by human activity.
The main focus of the project is to understand how this species interacts with different fishing gears —both artisanal (such as trammel nets and gillnets) and industrial (mainly trawling)— and to assess the ecological and conservation consequences of these interactions.
To achieve these goals, TrunCAT combines satellite telemetry, photo-identification, and aerial drone photogrammetry techniques, which allow for estimating body condition and individual size. The project adopts a socio-ecological and ecosystem-based perspective, integrating the study of dolphin ecology with the analysis of its relationship with fisheries, with the goal of generating useful knowledge for long-term marine conservation.
